Some people want diamond rings
Jan 10th, 2007 by summer
I think it’s my hippy upbringing. On my fourth birthday my neighbor gave me one of those green plastic baskets of strawberries. I couldn’t believe my luck. A whole basket, just for me!
The strawberry basket moment was relived yesterday evening when the hub and I walked two blocks to Sur La Table and made a very exciting purchase (left). I couldn’t believe my luck! A whole salad spinner, just for me!
My new spinner extraordinaire comes complete with a non slip pump knob which can be locked down for storage, grippy bottom, separate storage lid, and a push button brake that stops the rotating basket so I can remove the the dried salad inside. Oh, joyous day!
After the unveiling, I headed straight to my porch garden with the inner white basket (which doubles as a colander), picked the lettuce, rinsed it under the sink, and the fun ensued…
The convo:
Me: Watch! pump, pump, spiiiiin, brake
Hub: You are so easy to please.
Me: But look at all the water from the lettuce!
Hub: Whoa! Can I try?!
So fast, so convenient, so much greener than using paper towels. I sure am a lucky gal.

You’re so cute!

Thanks Jasmin, but I’m not sure it gets much cuter than the Worsted Witch!
Summer,
I have that exact same spinner! Guess what? I discovered through my Everday Greens cookbook that these do double duty as greenhouses for your greens in the fridge. It’s true. I buy my salad greens at the farmer’s market, spin’em dry, and store them in the spinner.
Voila, for over a week — salads that taste like they were plucked right out of the garden that day.
Amazing.
Thanks for sharing!
[...] Summer hearts the salad spinner she got at Sur La Table, but I’m holding off on getting that until I get a more robust balcony garden going. What’s holding me back: The farmers’ market’s like 15 blocks from me — which I usually opt to walk though I can ride my bike — which is a bit far to be hauling live plants for my balcony. [...]
