Vegan Jello Shots
Sep 10th, 2008 by summer

My buddies Traci, Siel, and I threw a political “fun” raiser last weekend. We thought handing out a Jello Shot to every party goer would add to the fun so we advertised it on our Evite. Problem? Many of our attendees and 2/3 of the hostesses are vegan or vegetarian… and Jello has gelatin which is made up of ground up animal bones - whoops!
After a little research, I found a recipe for vegan jello shots from these zany guys, and modified it slightly to create this peach flavored American flag themed Jello shot platter.
Results were pretty darn good. They looked just like Jello shots with a vibrant and clear color. I expected them to be runny, but the shots were quite gelatinous. The crowd seemed to be pleased with the taste and our vegan friends were pleasantly surprised that they could join in on the fun. Success!
Here’s what I used:
2 Tbsp. agar agar (sea vegetables), available at Whole Foods in the Asian Foods section.
1 Cup Santa Cruz Organic Peach Juice
1 Tablespoon of organic, Fair Trade sugar
4 oz. vodka
4 oz. Peach Schnapps (for blue shots, substitute two shots of peach schnapps with two shots of Blue Curacao, for red add 2 shots of Rose’s Grenadine)
Directions:
Bring juice, agar agar, and sugar to a boil and stir rapidly. Allow to cool enough so that the liquid is no longer steaming. Add alcohol. Stir vigorously. Pour into cups. Refrigerate. Serve chilled.
Green note:
Making your own jello shots (alcohol or otherwise) is certainly more healthy than getting the packets, and more green cuz you can choose your own organic sweetening agent. Little single serving plastic disposable cups, however, are not very eco. My bad excuse on this round is a time crunch. Better alternatives would be using small paper cups or pouring the mixture into a glass pan and cutting it into squares for easy serving.
Political note:
If you’re looking to vote for the environment this year, check out how green your candidate is on Grist.

That’s a fantastic recipe. You’ve got a great blog.

[...] Elements Blog has a great recipe for vegan jello shots. I personally don’t dig J-E-L-L-O at all but if ever there was a reason to indulge, Vodka [...]
making them in ice cube trays is super easy and doesn’t require disposable cups. probably doesn’t look as cool though unless you have crazy shaped trays.
Thanks for the recipe! I’m definitely going to try that.
Great idea about the ice trays Alex. Will give that a try next time. I also have a brain-shaped jello mold that could be fun/disgusting for Halloween.

Thanks for your recipe! I’m experimenting and trying to make some yummy vegan-o shots for a fundraiser…The idea came from a surplus of sample size compostable bioplastic cups I have…solves the waste/eco issue of plastic cups and promotes vegan drunkery!
i was wondering how much that recipe makes?!
thanks

I cant wait to try out this recipe. I am a new vegetarian and just found out how jello is made and what gelatin is made of. I am absolutely appalled by this discovery. I used to make jello shots for every party. From now on its jell-NO shots. Thanks so much for posting this and I cant wait to check out the rest of your blog.
